What this can feel like

Pain that has become familiar, in the jaw, neck, back, hips or joints. An old injury that never fully resolved, or tension that has built up so gradually you stopped noticing when it started.

Long-held pain often shapes how you move, sleep and hold yourself, long after the original cause.

This might sound familiar if you are living with

  • Pain in the jaw, neck, back, hips or joints that has become familiar
  • An old injury or ache that never fully resolved
  • Tension that has built up so gradually you stopped noticing when it started
  • Having tried physio, medication or injections with limited lasting relief
  • Bracing for pain before it has even arrived
  • Wanting to move, sleep or hug your children again without wincing

Where the pain sits

Back, neck, jaw and joints

Pain has a place in the body, and the place tells me a lot. These are the areas I work with most, including injuries from sport and an active life.

Lower back pain and sciatica

An ache across the low back that stiffens after sitting or driving. Or a pain that starts in the buttock and runs down the back of the leg, sometimes with tingling in the foot. Sciatica begins with irritation of the nerve, and then the muscles of the hip and pelvis tighten around it to protect it, which adds a second layer of pain on top of the first.

I work with both layers. Acupuncture along the back and the leg, sometimes with electro-acupuncture, and hands-on release of the glutes, the piriformis and the deep muscles beside the spine. Cupping often helps where the tissue has gone hard and cold.

Neck and shoulder pain

Shoulders that live up by the ears. A neck that grinds when you turn to reverse the car. Pain between the shoulder blades after a day at a laptop, or from carrying a child on one hip for years. Sometimes a frozen shoulder, where the arm will not lift past a certain point and nights are the worst.

Here needles and hands work together. Myofascial release and Tui Na open the tissue, acupuncture calms the pain signal and the nervous system underneath it. When neck tension feeds into headaches, that is part of the same picture, see migraines and headaches.

Jaw pain, clenching and TMJ

A jaw that clicks, aches on waking, or tires when you chew. Teeth that grind at night. Tension that spreads to the temples, the ears, the back of the head. The jaw is one of the first places the body holds stress, and many women do not notice they are clenching until someone presses on the muscle.

Treatment is gentle: acupuncture and slow release of the jaw muscles from the outside, together with the neck and shoulders that hold the jaw in place. Because clenching so often comes from a nervous system that cannot switch off, I treat that too, see anxiety and stress.

Hip, knee and joint pain

Hips that ache on the stairs, knees that complain after a walk in the hills, joints that stiffen in the cold and damp. An old injury that healed on the scan but never quite in the body.

Acupuncture around the joint and along the channels that feed it, with bodywork for the muscles that have changed how you walk to protect it. Moxibustion, the warmth of burning mugwort, is useful where pain is worse with cold, see moxibustion. Pelvic and period pain have their own page, see hormonal health.

Sports and activity injuries

Running, hiking, climbing, cycling, yoga. A strained calf that keeps catching, an Achilles or a hamstring that never quite settles, a shoulder that complains after climbing, a knee that aches on the way down a hill. Old sprains that healed but left the joint stiff and guarded.

Treatment combines acupuncture, often with electro-acupuncture, with hands-on work for the muscles and fascia around the injury, and cupping where tissue has tightened. The aim is to ease the pain, free the movement the body has been protecting, and help you get back to what you love doing. I work alongside your physiotherapist if you have one.

Please seek help straight away if back pain comes with numbness around your genitals or buttocks, new difficulty passing urine or controlling your bowels, or weakness in both legs. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome and need urgent hospital care, not acupuncture. Call 999 or go to A&E.

Client stories

I had chronic neck pain and a frozen shoulder for over a year. Physiotherapy, massage, exercises, even steroid injections, with no lasting relief. After five sessions, ninety per cent less pain. I can finally drive, sleep and hug my kids without pain.

Client, neck pain and frozen shoulder. Shared with permission.

Having had various physio sessions over many years with moderate success, I decided to try an alternative route and that is when I met Ela… She has identified the issues that no one else had and after my first session there was a marked improvement, after 3 sessions, I felt better than I had in years. Ela is a highly intelligent, informed and skilled practitioner and I would HIGHLY recommend her to anybody looking to get pain free.

How treatment can help

At Zest Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine, I design effective treatments combining acupuncture, somatic bodywork and herbal medicine around your individual pattern, not a fixed protocol.

Acupuncture and hands-on bodywork work directly with the areas of your body that have become held or reactive, easing tension and supporting your body’s own pain-regulating systems.

If your pain has settled into your body over months or years, I will tell you honestly that treatment tends to work in a gradual, cumulative way rather than as a single fix. I also look with you at what keeps the pattern in place, posture, movement habits, sleep and stress, so relief holds between sessions rather than fading straight after.

Common questions

Could you help me?›

Nearly always – YES. In over twelve years of practice, there have been only a few people I could not help because they needed surgery or the damage in the body had gone too far. You will see improvement within three appointments if I can help.

Questions about needles, sessions and what to expect are answered on the FAQ page.

Can acupuncture help with chronic back or joint pain, and how long does it take?›

Acupuncture and bodywork work directly with areas that have become held or reactive, easing tension and supporting the body's own pain-regulating systems. Some women notice a shift within three to five sessions, especially for pain that has not had long to settle in, while longer-standing pain usually needs a longer course. We review progress together throughout, alongside attention to posture, movement and sleep.

Can acupuncture help with sciatica?›

Many women find acupuncture and bodywork ease sciatic pain, especially the muscle tension around the hip and pelvis that builds up around an irritated nerve. I will ask about your symptoms carefully first, and if anything suggests you need a scan or urgent medical care, I will tell you.

Can you treat jaw pain, teeth grinding, stress headaches and neck pain?›

Yes. Jaw tension, clenching and TMJ pain, along with stress headaches and neck pain, are a classic stress pattern and respond well to acupuncture combined with Tui Na, myofascial release and fascia work. Together they release the physical tension in the jaw, neck and shoulders while calming the nervous system that keeps recreating it.

Do you use electro-acupuncture for pain?›

Sometimes. A very mild current between two needles can help with stubborn muscle and nerve pain. It feels like a light tapping or pulsing, and it is only used if it suits you.

Can acupuncture help with sports injuries?›

Many people find acupuncture and bodywork helpful for strains, tendon pain and joints that stay stiff after an injury, from running, hiking, climbing or cycling. I can work alongside your physiotherapist, and I will tell you if an injury needs to be checked by a doctor first.
