For cycles that have become irregular, painful or unpredictable, and the hormonal shifts that ripple through mood and energy.

What this can feel like

Periods that arrive early, late or with pain that disrupts your week. Mood that shifts sharply in the days before a cycle. Skin, sleep or appetite that seem to follow a pattern you cannot quite name.

Hormonal symptoms are often treated as separate complaints, when they usually belong to one connected rhythm. This includes PCOS-related symptoms and endometriosis symptoms, which can also sit within this wider pattern.

How treatment can help

At Zest Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine, I design effective treatments combining acupuncture, somatic bodywork and herbal medicine around your individual pattern, not a fixed protocol.

I work with your whole cycle, not just the week your symptoms appear. Acupuncture and herbs aim to restore a steadier rhythm for you across the month, alongside practical support for sleep, stress and nourishment.

Change is usually gradual, and we track it cycle by cycle rather than expecting it overnight.

If you can, keep a simple note of your symptoms alongside your cycle. It helps us both see your pattern more clearly, so I can adjust treatment to where you actually are each month, not to a generic average cycle.

Period pain, PMS and PMDD

Cramping that sends you to bed for a day. A dragging ache in the low back and thighs. The week before, a shorter temper, tender breasts, a low that feels out of all proportion to what is happening. For some women this is PMDD, where the week before bleeding is hard to get through at all.

In Chinese medicine, pain at the start of a period often points to something that is not moving freely, while an ache that comes at the end points more to depletion. The emotional swings of PMS are usually read through the Liver, the system that keeps things flowing smoothly, in the body and in mood. The treatment follows the pattern: warming and moving for one woman, nourishing and settling for another. Moxibustion is often part of it where the pain eases with a hot water bottle.

Irregular cycles, PCOS and endometriosis

Cycles that stretch to six weeks, then come after three. Cycles that never quite settled after stopping the pill. PCOS, with its irregular or missing periods, skin and weight changes. Endometriosis, where pain can reach far beyond the days of bleeding.

Acupuncture and herbs do not replace the investigations and care your GP or gynaecologist offers, and I will always encourage you to get new or worsening symptoms checked. What they can do is support the body alongside that care: easing pain, supporting a steadier rhythm, and helping with the tiredness, low mood and gut symptoms that so often come with these conditions.

Common questions

Could you help me?›

Nearly always – YES. In over twelve years of practice, there have been only a few people I could not help because they needed surgery or the damage in the body had gone too far. You will see improvement within three appointments if I can help.

Questions about needles, sessions and what to expect are answered on the FAQ page.

Can acupuncture help balance hormones, and how long before I notice a difference?›

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work with the whole menstrual cycle, not just the days symptoms appear, aiming to support a steadier rhythm month by month. Change is gradual, so many women track it across two to three cycles, though some symptoms, such as sleep or mood, can ease sooner.

Can acupuncture help with period pain?›

Many women find acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs ease period pain over a few cycles. Treatment is shaped by when the pain comes and what eases it, since cramping at the start of a period and a dull ache at the end are read as different patterns.

Can you help with PCOS or endometriosis?›

I work alongside your GP or gynaecologist, not instead of them. Acupuncture and herbs can support cycle regularity, ease pain, and help with the fatigue, low mood and digestive symptoms that often come with PCOS and endometriosis.
