Getting here from Stockport

Whaley Bridge is ten miles from Stockport town centre. By car it takes about 22 minutes when the roads are clear, and up to 35 minutes in rush hour. I see clients in the mornings and in the evenings, so we can pick a time that misses the worst of the A6.

The train is often the easier choice. The Buxton line runs from Stockport to Whaley Bridge in about 30 minutes, with a stop at Hazel Grove on the way, and the clinic is a 2 minute walk from the platform and 4 minutes from the station bus stop (buses 199, 61, 60, 60A and 190). You arrive without having gripped a steering wheel for half an hour, which matters more than it sounds when you have come to let your shoulders drop.

Buses that stop in Whaley Bridge: the Skyline 199 runs daily between Buxton and Manchester Airport, via Hazel Grove and Stockport. The 61 runs between Buxton and Glossop, via New Mills and Hayfield. The 60 and 60A run between Macclesfield and New Mills or Hayfield. The 190 runs between Buxton and Whaley Bridge, via Chapel-en-le-Frith and Chinley. The 199 runs every day; the others run mainly Monday to Saturday. See all bus times for Whaley Bridge →

Driving in? At the first junction in Disley, turn right into Buxton Old Road. It is a quieter way over the hill, and on a clear evening, a lovely one.

Why drive past the clinics closer to home?

If you live in Stockport, there are acupuncturists nearer to you. It is a fair question why you would come out to Whaley Bridge.

The first reason is my hands. To help bring my twin sons back to wellness, I massaged them every day, and later three or four times a week, for twelve years. Touching the same bodies, year after year, taught me what truly works and what does not. From that came my skills in myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, fascia work and visceral therapy, learned not from a course but from the body itself.

The second is the way I think. Before Chinese medicine, I was a scientist. For fifteen years I analysed data and tested hypotheses. That training lets me bring different approaches together, in width and in depth, and keep only what helps you. I come to your body from the mind, and through the touch.

The third is time, and one person doing all of it. A first appointment is two hours, or 90 minutes for one simple issue, and follow-ups are an hour. Acupuncture or needle-free acupressure sits at the centre, and around it I add what your body needs on the day. You are not sent to three different rooms for three parts of the same problem.

And the clinic is built around women’s health. Pain, cycles, digestion and the nervous system are read together, because in a woman’s body they rarely behave as separate complaints.

A client story

I had chronic neck pain and a frozen shoulder that lasted over a year. I tried physiotherapy, massage, exercises, even steroid injections. After five sessions there was ninety per cent less pain, and my shoulder moves again. I can finally drive, sleep and hug my kids without pain.

Make a day of it

A walking reset in the High Peak.

The journey can be part of the treatment. Book an early session, then have lunch in Whaley Bridge and walk it in: up Eccles Pike for the wide views, or along the flat canal towpath. Or do it the other way round: walk in the morning, have lunch, and arrive for an afternoon appointment already a little softer. Time in the hills, close to nature, helps the nervous system settle and rejuvenate, and the treatment goes deeper for it.
