Acupuncture, Somatic Bodywork & Herbs in High Peak

Acupuncture for anxiety, panic, stress and overwhelm in women, near Stockport and the High Peak

When the nervous system has been on alert for too long, and the body forgets how to feel safe.

A woman sits at her desk in distress, head in her hands, overwhelmed in front of her laptop.

What this can feel like

It doesn’t look the same for everyone, and it rarely arrives as just one thing. These are three of the shapes it tends to take — often overlapping, sometimes taking turns.

A young woman crouched inside a cardboard box, looking up with a worried, guarded expression.

Anxiety & panic

A sudden surge of fear that seems to come from nowhere — a racing heart, a tight throat, the urge to run even when nothing is actually wrong. It can pass in minutes or linger for hours, and leave you wary of when it might return.

Stress

The felt weight of too much for too long — deadlines, responsibilities and other people’s needs stacked on top of your own, until your shoulders sit up by your ears and you can’t remember the last time you exhaled properly.

A woman lies face down, head resting on her arm, in quiet distress.

Overwhelm, to the point of inaction

A kind of shutdown where even small tasks feel impossible. You know what needs doing, but your body won’t move. It isn’t laziness — it’s a nervous system that has run out of runway.

This might sound familiar if you are living with

  • A racing mind that will not switch off, even when you are exhausted
  • A tight chest, shallow breath, or a heart that pounds for no clear reason
  • Panic that arrives without warning, sometimes in the most ordinary moments
  • A constant, low-grade hum of overwhelm that never quite lifts
  • Feeling one step from tipping over, holding everything together by will alone
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep, or waking already anxious before the day begins

How treatment can help

At Zest Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine, I design effective treatments combining acupuncture, somatic bodywork and herbal medicine around your individual pattern, not a fixed protocol.

If your nervous system has been stuck in alert, you may already have tried to “just relax”, and found it doesn’t work that way. Acupuncture and bodywork work directly with that alert state. In your sessions I bring in breath, sound and touch to help your body find a steadier rhythm again, alongside herbs where I think you need them.

This sits within Release and Resolve, the first two of the four movements I work with. We begin with what your body is holding, and go from there.

Many of the women I see notice their sleep, digestion and general sense of safety improve alongside the anxiety itself, since these systems are never really separate. I keep sessions unhurried, and pace them to how much your nervous system can take in on a given day.

Research summary

What the evidence says

Evidence for acupuncture and anxiety has grown in recent years. A 2022 review of 27 randomised controlled trials found acupuncture eased anxiety symptoms in generalised anxiety disorder, with fewer side effects than the treatments it was compared with, most of which were medications, though the researchers noted more high-quality trials are still needed.

Research in perimenopausal women specifically has linked acupuncture to improvements in anxiety alongside hot flushes and disrupted sleep, and separate research into irritable bowel syndrome has found acupuncture eases both digestive symptoms and anxiety-type responses together, reflecting how closely the gut and nervous system are connected.

Common questions

Could you help me?›

Nearly always – YES. In over twelve years of practice, there have been only a few people I could not help because they needed surgery or the damage in the body had gone too far. You will see improvement within three appointments if I can help.

Questions about needles, sessions and what to expect are answered on the FAQ page.

Can acupuncture help with anxiety and panic attacks, alongside my medication?›

Many women notice a calmer, steadier nervous system after a course of acupuncture, alongside bodywork, breathwork and sound. These treatments are generally used alongside therapy or medication rather than instead of them, and I will never suggest changing or stopping anything you have been prescribed. That conversation always stays between you and your GP or psychiatrist.

How many sessions will I need for anxiety or overwhelm?›

This varies from person to person. Many women notice some ease within one to three sessions, with more settled change by three to five, often coming a little more closely spaced at first before easing back to weekly. We review how you are doing together as we go, and adjust the pace to suit you.

Can this help if my anxiety is tied up with IBS, or with perimenopause and menopause?›

Yes. Anxiety and IBS often drive each other along the gut-brain axis, so calming one tends to ease the other, and acupuncture, visceral therapy and Tui Na work well together here. Hormonal changes through perimenopause and menopause can also make mood, sleep and anxiety harder to manage, and research in perimenopausal women has linked acupuncture to eased anxiety alongside improvements in hot flushes and sleep.

What if I’m so overwhelmed I can’t even relax or find the motivation to do anything?›

This is where sound therapy, acupuncture and bodywork combine particularly well. Sound therapy settles an overstimulated nervous system enough for the body to actually take in acupuncture and touch, rather than bracing against them, so sessions often open with sound before moving into needling and hands-on work.

Is there research evidence behind this?›

Yes, and it is growing. A 2022 review of 27 randomised trials found acupuncture eased anxiety symptoms in generalised anxiety disorder, with fewer side effects than the treatments it was compared with, most of which were medications, though the researchers called for more high-quality trials.
