Changing cycles, hot flushes, disrupted sleep, mood change and the transition into a new season of life.

Perimenopause, the years leading up to the final period, often begins in the early to mid forties, sometimes earlier, and can last for several years. Cycles start to change: shorter, heavier, further apart or simply unpredictable. Premenstrual tension may become stronger than it has ever been, with rage, tearfulness or anxiety arriving in the days before a period. Sleep becomes lighter, energy dips, and many women describe brain fog, a shorter fuse and a sense of being all over the place.
Because periods are still coming, and blood tests can look normal on the day they are taken, it is easy for perimenopause to go unrecognised, by doctors and by women themselves. Many assume they are simply stressed, or failing to cope.
Menopause itself is reached once a full year has passed without a period. Heat that rises without warning. Nights broken by sweats or a mind that will not switch off. Mood that feels less predictable than it used to, alongside joints, skin or memory that all seem to be shifting at once.
Perimenopause and menopause can feel like several changes happening together, without anyone naming the whole picture.

This might sound familiar if you are living with

At Zest Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine, I design effective treatments combining acupuncture, somatic bodywork and herbal medicine around your individual pattern, not a fixed protocol.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can support your temperature regulation, sleep and mood through this transition, and I work alongside any medical care you are receiving.
Many of the women I see find a few weeks of regular treatment brings a steadier, calmer sense of themselves, even while the transition continues.
Once things have settled, acupuncture can also become ongoing care. During perimenopause, many women choose a monthly session timed for the week before their period, when tension, irritability and poor sleep tend to peak. Others, before or after menopause, simply come once a month as a way of keeping tension and the nervous system in check, so that the stress of ordinary life does not quietly build back up.
I adjust your treatment as your transition changes, and it works well alongside HRT or other medical care. Many women come to see the whole shift, physical, hormonal and emotional, as one connected season rather than a set of separate problems, and I will be glad to walk through it with you.
Nearly always – YES. In over twelve years of practice, there have been only a few people I could not help because they needed surgery or the damage in the body had gone too far. You will see improvement within three appointments if I can help.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are used to support temperature regulation, sleep and mood through perimenopause and menopause, working alongside any HRT or medical care you are already receiving.
No. Many women begin treatment years into the transition, often after trying several other things first. Menopause is reached after twelve months without a period, but hot flushes, night sweats, broken sleep, joint aches, dryness and low mood can continue for years afterwards. Acupuncture, bodywork and herbs can ease these and support sleep, energy and a steadier nervous system, wherever you are in the process.
It may be, and it is very common. Perimenopause can begin years before periods stop, and mood swings, poor sleep, anxiety, brain fog, changing cycles and stronger premenstrual symptoms are easily put down to stress. Fluctuating hormones affect mood, energy and sleep, and poor sleep amplifies everything else. You do not need a diagnosis to begin: I treat the pattern your body is showing, calming the nervous system, improving sleep and restoring energy. I also encourage you to speak to your GP, so other causes such as thyroid changes or low iron can be checked, especially if low mood feels persistent or heavy.
