How I work

The layers of the body, working as one.

Pain, sleep, digestion, hormonal health and emotional life can meet in the same body. I read you as layers built one on top of the other, and treatment always starts at the foundation and moves up.

Most of what brings women to see me doesn’t live in one place. A racing mind, a stubborn gut, a cycle in disarray, a fertility path that feels uncertain, skin or immunity that won’t settle, emotions that swing without warning — these usually aren’t separate problems. They’re one pattern, showing up across the same connected body. Over a decade in Chinese medicine, including acupuncture and herbal medicine, after an earlier career in research and data analysis, have taught me to read that whole pattern at once, rather than chase one symptom while three others quietly worsen.

Layers, built as a whole

Not separate treatments. One body, four layers.

The foundation is the physical body: your muscles, fascia, posture and joints, and the tension held within them. Above it sits the vital body — everything to do with movement and communication inside you: breath and immunity, circulation, digestion, hormonal rhythm. Here we look at what’s stuck or held, and at whatever is disturbing the flow of nutrients or neural signals through the system, working through the fascia and through all three parts of the nervous system: central, autonomic and enteric. Then comes the emotional layer, where we enable the flow of emotion and cultivate wellness from the inside out. Finally, we reclaim a new identity in healing. At any stage we may use acupuncture, bodywork therapies, somatic approaches, sound or nutrition — most of these methods work across several layers at once. But the order matters: we always begin with the foundation.

Foundation

The physical body

Stress does not stay abstract. Over time it settles into muscle, fascia, posture and the joints, until tension and pain start to feel like simply how your body is now. We begin here, always, releasing what has become held through acupuncture, therapeutic bodywork and myofascial work, whether that shows up as migraines, neck, shoulder or back pain, period pain, or a deeper pattern beneath them.

What you’ll notice: A physical lightness. Pain easing. A nervous system with room to settle, and often digestion quietening alongside it.

How it helps: Acupuncture is understood to influence pain signalling and to support the body’s parasympathetic response, the state associated with rest and repair.

Layer two

The vital body

Your gut and your nervous system are in constant conversation, largely through the vagus nerve. The vital body is everything that involves movement and communication inside you — breath and immunity, circulation, digestion, hormonal rhythm — and here we look for what’s stuck or held, and for whatever is disturbing the flow of nutrients or neural signals through the system. We work through the fascia and through all three parts of the nervous system: central, autonomic and enteric. When stress runs for too long, that conversation becomes difficult: bloating, unpredictable digestion, food sensitivities, constipation or urgency, immunity that won’t settle. For many women, disrupted digestion also means disrupted hormonal rhythm, so period pain, PCOS-related symptoms, endometriosis symptoms and energy crashes can all belong to the same picture. Acupuncture, targeted nutrition and herbal medicine work here to resolve what’s stuck and rebuild steadier function.

What you’ll notice: Digestion that feels more normal. Bloating that fades. Steadier energy, and a nervous system with more capacity for daily life.

How it helps: Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are used, traditionally and increasingly in current research, to support gut-brain regulation and steadier stress-hormone rhythms.

Layer three

The emotional body

Anxiety, overwhelm and burnout are not only in your head. They live in the body: in breath patterns, in shoulders that sit high before you have even got out of bed. Long-held stress can leave the nervous system stuck in vigilance, so the mind races and rest feels genuinely hard to reach. Here we work to enable the flow of emotion that may have been avoided, suppressed or stuck, and to cultivate wellness from the inside — regrowing your internal resources, not just managing what shows on the surface. Acupuncture, somatic practices, visceral therapy and breathwork work with what the body is already holding. You do not need to talk through the past for this to help. Your body already knows how to heal; the work is creating the conditions for it to do so.

What you’ll notice: A quieter mind. Anxiety easing. A returning sense of presence, control and safety.

How it helps: Acupuncture is associated with a shift toward parasympathetic, rest-and-digest nervous system activity, easing the body out of a prolonged stress response.

Integration

Reclaiming who you are

When the physical, vital and emotional layers are addressed together, physical ease supports a calmer mind, a calmer mind supports better digestion, and steadier digestion supports more even hormones and energy. This final layer is not a fourth separate treatment. It is what becomes possible once the rest of the pattern has room to settle — a new identity in healing, the point where you stop managing symptoms one at a time and start trusting your body as a whole system again.

What you’ll notice: A body that feels resilient. Able to meet daily life without being run by it.

Not a ladder

The work is cyclical, like the seasons.

Healing does not move in a straight line. It moves in cycles, like the changing seasons: a time to loosen, a time to nourish, a time to rest, and a time for something new to grow. Each cycle begins when your body releases physical tension, which is why the foundation always comes first.

Sometimes all the layers are addressed within one session, especially in a longer visit such as a Deep Work day or a 2-hour De-Stress session. At other times one aspect leads, and the session works mainly with the physical body, or mainly with the emotional layer. Your body sets the order, not a fixed plan.

Either way, the work continues between sessions. Through the self-care I suggest for your situation, your body readjusts, and at the next visit it presents slightly new patterns. We meet you where you are that day, and every new cycle goes a little further than the last.

Why I combine modalities

More than a needle in a cushion.

In my practice, acupuncture, Tui Na (Chinese massage) and fascia-informed bodywork are used together rather than in isolation: acupuncture modulates pain and influences the nervous system, supporting broader regulation of sleep, stress, digestion and hormones, while bodywork addresses the local tension patterns, joint restrictions and movement habits that keep pain or stiffness in place.

A typical visit starts with a brief check-in on how you’ve been since your last session, moves into acupuncture suited to whatever pattern is present that day, and often includes hands-on work wherever tension or restriction has settled. You’ll usually leave with one or two simple, realistic suggestions, for movement, breath or self-touch, to carry what we’ve done into the days between.

Other times, what’s needed is moxibustion, gua sha, cupping or sound therapy instead. Whatever the pattern calls for is simply part of the session, and there is no extra charge for combining approaches.

What makes Zest Acupuncture different

Care that treats you from the inside out, the way the body heals itself.

Multi-Modal, Integral Care

Care that treats you as a whole system

Each session is a personalised blend of therapies. Centred on acupuncture and therapeutic bodywork, we weave together what your body actually needs, from visceral therapy and myofascial release to herbal medicine, breathwork and nutritional guidance. Everything under one roof, working as one treatment.

Ancient Wisdom and Modern Data

A mind that sees patterns others miss

Chinese medicine and modern research on the nervous system, the gut-brain axis and stress point to the same thing: the body doesn’t hold pain, digestion and mood in separate compartments. When tension, emotional overwhelm and digestive dysfunction are treated together instead of one at a time, the whole system settles faster.

Unrushed Visits

Appointments that respect you

Both consultations and treatments are longer than at similar clinics, because real care cannot be rushed. You’ll be listened to, properly assessed, and treated with the full attention your complexity deserves.

A Practice with a Purpose

I will see you

This isn’t about fitting you into a protocol. It’s about finding what genuinely works for you, with rigour, with warmth, and with your whole wellbeing at the centre of every decision.
