Acupuncture, bodywork & cupping for men

Care for men in Whaley Bridge, High Peak, near Stockport

For pain, injuries and stress that have been there too long. Often after years of pushing through.

A therapist works into a man's shoulder blade during a bodywork treatment.

About a quarter of my clients are men

They come for pain that physio, painkillers or rest have not fully solved. For a sports injury that keeps coming back. For stress that sits in the shoulders and the gut, and sleep that no longer restores.

The approach is practical. I assess where the problem really comes from, treat it with acupuncture and hands-on work, and give you a clear plan. We review progress honestly as we go.

What men come to me with

Pain, injury and stress

Back, neck and shoulder pain

Low back pain and sciatica, a neck that grinds when you turn, shoulders that never drop after a day at a desk or behind the wheel. More on pain →

Sports injuries and rehab

Running, hiking, climbing, cycling. A calf, hamstring or Achilles that keeps catching, a shoulder that complains after climbing, a knee that aches on the way down a hill. I can work alongside your physiotherapist.

Stiff joints and old injuries

Hips, knees and joints that stiffen in the cold, or an old sprain that healed on the scan but never quite in the body.

Stress, anxiety and sleep

A mind that will not switch off, tension headaches, a jaw that clenches at night, a gut that reacts to pressure. Acupuncture calms the stress response directly. More on stress and anxiety →

Please seek help straight away if back pain comes with numbness around your genitals or buttocks, new difficulty passing urine or controlling your bowels, or weakness in both legs. Call 999 or go to A&E.

How treatment works

Each session combines acupuncture, sometimes with electro-acupuncture, with hands-on work: Tui Na, myofascial release, cupping and gua sha where the tissue has tightened.

The aim is to ease the pain, free the movement your body has been protecting, and help you get back to what you enjoy doing. Alongside treatment, I look with you at what keeps the problem in place, such as posture, training load, sleep and stress.

Touch alone helps a lot. But there is no replacement for acupuncture: in many cases touch alone will not lead to the same effect, though it may still help. Often I need only a few needles, one to four.

Referrals are welcome from physiotherapists, osteopaths and GPs.

What men say

In their own words

“Having had various physio sessions over many years with moderate success, I decided to try an alternative route and that is when I met Ela… She has identified the issues that no one else had and after my first session there was a marked improvement, after 3 sessions, I felt better than I had in years.”
Mark, Glossop · long-term pain
“Ela has been helping me with sleep (insomnia) and headaches caused by stress and tension. She has taken a multi-faceted approach using Chinese medicine diagnosis and touch-based investigation. We have slowly begun to resolve the sleep issue, and as a result the headaches are beginning to allay. I’ve found her warm, exceptionally skilled and quick with her results.”

Common questions

Do you really treat men?›

Yes. About a quarter of the people I see are men. My practice specialises in women’s health, and for everyone the consultation and treatment are the same careful, unhurried process.

Can acupuncture help sports injuries?›

Many people find acupuncture and bodywork helpful for strains, tendon pain and joints that stay stiff after an injury, from running, hiking, climbing or cycling. I can work alongside your physiotherapist, and I will tell you if an injury needs to be checked by a doctor first.

How many sessions will I need?›

Most people notice some change within one to three sessions, with more substantial shifts by three to five. Recent injuries often settle faster than pain that has been there for years. We review progress together, and if you are not noticing change, I will say so.

Can I claim on health insurance?›

Often, yes. Many health insurance plans refund part of the cost of acupuncture. You receive an invoice with my ATCM registration number to send to your insurer. Please check your own policy before you book.

What should I wear?›

Shorts and a loose T-shirt are ideal, because acupuncture often uses points on the arms and legs, away from where the problem is. You stay covered where I am not working.
